[Serger Files Singer 14T957DC]: The Two-thread Overedge Stitch - O ponto de orlar de 2 fios

EN Summary: The 2-Thread Overedge Stitch uses only two threads, one on the needle (typically the right overedge needle for a narrower stitch) and the lower looper thread (light blue and turquoise blue, respectively). The upper looper is working as a spreader (not threaded). It's a stitch suitable for overedging (not seaming) sheer to medium weight fabrics. It's both economical (only two threads) and non-bulky. Keep reading for the full article.

EN: The settings of the machine are the usual for overedging: the Overedge Guide plate is installed, the Upper Knife is engaged, the stitch finger is on N, the Upper Looper Clutch is disengaged (upper looper is moving), yet, since the upper looper is not threaded, the spreader is used (the lever that covers the upper looper eye). When threading the lower looper, the thread tail should pass over the spreader and be pulled to the back and left, under the presser foot. It's always good remembering to keep the presser foot up while threading (on this machine it releases the tensions on the tension disks):
---
EN: In this case only the blue dial (right overedge needle) and the red dial (lower looper) are being used; the tensions for this stitch/fabric combination were 0.5 on the needle (blue dial) and 5.5 on the lower looper (red dial); these tensions may vary on different sergers and with the fabric used but you should expect a very low tension on the needle and a higher tension on the looper (the needle thread must be pulled to the fabric edge and interlock with the looper thread in this case).
---
EN: Regarding the side knobs, I lowered the foot pressure slightly and also decreased the differential feed (because I'm working with a very sheer fabric and wan't to avoid puckering). I also tweaked the cutting width to a lower value. The stitch length remained on N. After making sure the stitch is well balanced (using two different color threads so I'm able to see which thread needs adjustment and what kind of adjustment is needed), I wanted a better color match with my overedge stitch. I decided to use an all-purpose thread instead of the light blue thread cone. Since the all-purpose thread spools are not designed for vertical feed like cones are, a Thread Unwinder Spool Cap must be inserted to the spool before using it on the serger:
---
EN: The spool covered with the Thread Unwinder Spool Cap remains elevated when inserted onto the thread pin; the thread is fed evenly and there's no risk of it getting tangled around the thread pin:
---
EN: Next you can see a side seam on a dress I'm making; I serged the edges first and stitched the seam using my regular sewing machine; then I pressed the SAs open:
---
EN: Another use for the 2-thread overedge stitch is sewing a serged french seam like the one pictured below (this specific seam is supposed to show the right side on the left panel, it's not a mistake; it will wrap to the front of the dress showing the right side of the fabric). You need to do the math with the stitch width and the pre-cut SA used so you know exactly how mutch the knife should trim away. First the seam is serged (intended wrong sides of fabric facing each other), then the serged edge is pressed to one side and one side is turned over creasing at the overedge seam; then use the regular sewing machine to stitch along the intended stitching line, encasing the serged edge inside. A final press and it's finished.
---

Beijinhos grandes!
Continuação de um excelente trabalho!
Boas férias (sempre na costura, claro! )
